The ascendancy of American Architecture. Modernism is traced from the Enlightenment through a sequence of historical revivals from which the two dichotomous aspects of 19th century architecture, art and utility, emerge. The European Art Nouveau style is viewed as a thematic counterpart to the achievements of Richardson, Sullivan and the Chicago School in America.
