About the Program
The baccalaureate program in nursing prepares generalist nurses to work in a variety of health-care settings and meet the diverse health needs of individuals and families across the life span and among all community groups. It is designed for women and men who feel challenged by the complex and ever-changing health needs of society and who have a desire to respond to these needs.
The early phase of the program combines liberal arts studies with biomedical and social sciences to provide a sound knowledge base for upper-division study and an awareness of cultural and societal influences on health and well-being. The curriculum is community-based. Initially, it emphasizes primary health care, which includes health promotion, risk reduction, and disease prevention; subsequently, it emphasizes the care of those with chronic as well as acute and complex illnesses. Upper-division courses focus on the knowledge and skills required to provide comprehensive nursing care in various clinical practice settings, ethical/legal dimensions of the health-care system, pharmacological components of care, nursing research, and principles and techniques of management within a health-system context.
Graduates of the baccalaureate program base their practice on theories, critical-thinking and research findings from nursing science as well as other disciplines, such as biological and behavioral sciences.
Degree Options
We offer four different programs for obtaining a bachelor’s degree in nursing.
Basic Nursing Program. This program provides the curriculum required for a freshman or transfer student who is pursuing a nursing degree for the first time.
Accelerated Bachelor of Science (ABS) Option for Second-Degree Students. The accelerated second-degree option offers the undergraduate nursing curriculum as an intensive, full-time, twelve-month program designed for the mature, highly motivated, career-minded student who has already completed an undergraduate and/or graduate degree in a field other than nursing.
RN Track Program. This track provides the curriculum needed by students who have completed an associate’s degree or diploma program in nursing.
Program Leading to Combined BS/MS Degree. The School of Nursing offers an accelerated program for students who have completed an associate’s degree or diploma in nursing and are seeking a master’s degree. This program allows students to complete the undergraduate portion of the program more quickly and then matriculate at the graduate level.
Advisement
Academic advisement for students applying to nursing programs, as well as those admitted to the major, is provided by the Office of Student Affairs and faculty in the School of Nursing.
Transfer Policy
Prerequisite courses may be transferred from other educational institutions if they are equivalent. Students should consult with the School of Nursing Student Affairs Office to determine equivalency.
Honors, Awards and Scholarships
Special scholarships for talented high school seniors, upper-division students, and those in the accelerated program.
Membership in the national honor society for nurses, Sigma Theta Tau International, through the Gamma Kappa chapter, which encourages and recognizes superior scholarship and leadership achievement in nursing.
Scholarships for full-time students who are residents of Erie County, supported by the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo.
Honors Research, a tutorial which provides outstanding undergraduate students in nursing the opportunity to enrich their education and gain personal recognition through participation in the scholarly work with a faculty mentor.
Notable Program Features
Two fully staffed computer labs for student use.
A fully equipped health assessment lab and nursing skills lab.
School of Nursing Simulation technology which features two state-of-the-art patient simulators - one housed in a virtual operating room and connected to patient monitors, and one utilized to simulate ambulatory and acute nursing situations.
The Center for Nursing Research, which houses a research library and is a repository for information on internal and external sources of funding, including guidelines and application forms.
A wide range of educational technology to which students have access, including a wide variety of health-care databases, computer assisted instruction, and electronic mail.
Faculty who are expert practitioners of nursing with advanced preparation in their specialties; many have achieved national and/or international recognition and can offer research opportunities for undergraduates.
