The journalism certificate is an interdisciplinary course of study comprising of coursework offered by the Departments of Communication, English and Media Study. The program provides students with a formal educational foundation in writing and reporting for publication as well as an understanding of the US and global media. In addition, the program fosters an understanding of journalism ethics and integrity standards associated with the journalism profession.
Certificate in Journalism.
Note: The certificate is awarded upon completion of all program requirements and completion of a bachelor’s degree at the University at Buffalo.
Students interested in the Journalism Certificate Program should seek advisement on course selection from the special major advisor in the College of Arts and Sciences Student Advisement and Services office, 275 Park Hall.
Acceptance Criteria
Minimum GPA of 2.5 overall.
Completion of the certificate program prerequisites with a minimum GPA of 2.5.
Students must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 overall in required and elective Certificate courses in order to remain in the program.
ENG 101 Writing 1 and ENG 201 Reading and Advanced Writing, or ENG 102 Writing 2, as placed, unless exempted
COM 101 Principles of Communication
COM 125 Introduction to the Internet
COM 240 Survey of Mass Communication or DMS 259 Introduction to Media Analysis
COM 353 Communication Ethics or ENG 393 Ethics in Journalism
