The mission of Student Affairs is to aid students as they develop through their university experience. We strive to create opportunities to enhance students' curricular and cocurricular lives. In pursuit of this mission, University at Buffalo Experience (UBE) offers such courses as UBE101 University Experience, UBE202 Career Planning, and UBE102 Dynamics of Leadership. UBE also offers courses from the Creative Craft Center that encourage students to develop skills and creativity in such areas as pottery, weaving, and jewelry making. Additionally, UBE offers a variety of independent study and internship opportunities in the areas of leadership development, peer mentoring, and peer education.
101 University Experience (1) (F; Sp)
Weekly seminar that aids new students' transition to the university. Throughout the semester, guided discussions focus on academic, career, and personal exploration. Each section is limited to twenty-four students, and is taught by a faculty or professional staff member and an undergraduate peer mentor. SEM
102 Dynamics of Leadership (2) (Sp)
Helps students acquire the skills, attitudes, and knowledge necessary to successfully take a leadership role in a group or organization. Emphasizes leadership in student organizations. Although participants need not have any leadership experience, it is recommended that they be an active member of a student group. SEM
104 Introduction to Design in Fibers (3) (F; Sp)
Introduces weaving, emphasizing design and production, both on and off looms, using three different techniques. LAB
105 Advanced Design in Fibers (3) (F; Sp)
Prerequisite: UBE104 or permission of instructor
Advanced study and application of the process of weaving, emphasizing design and production both on and off looms, using three different weaving techniques. LAB
106 Introduction to Design in Metals (3) (F; Sp)
Introduces the process of metal working, emphasizing jewelry design, construction, etching, and casting. LAB
107 Advanced Design in Metals (3) (F; Sp)
Prerequisite: UBE106 or permission of instructor
Advanced study of the applications of metal working, emphasizing jewelry design, construction, etching, and casting. LAB
108 Introduction to Design in Ceramics (3) (F; Sp)
Introduces the medium of clay using the techniques of hand building (coil and slab), potters wheel, and firing. LAB
109 Advanced Design in Ceramics (3) (F; Sp)
Prerequisite: UBE108 or permission of instructor
Advanced study of the medium of clay using the techniques of hand building (coil and slab), potters wheel, and firing. LAB
202 Career Planning (3) (F; Sp)
Prerequisite: permission of instructor
Assists students in the examination of their career choice. Focuses on career awareness, personal awareness, and educational awareness as they relate to the process of making a career decision. Discusses planning skills and self-assessment instruments that help identify tentative career options. Also explores decision-making strategies, resume/cover letter writing, interviewing skills, and job-search strategies are also explored. LEC
499 Independent Study (1-4) (F; Sp)
Prerequisite: permission of instructor
Offers the student a unique educational experience not covered by existing formal courses. TUT
