The Thomas J. Edwards Learning Center offers students an opportunity to develop their learning skills through credit-bearing courses in the areas of reading, writing, and mathematics. Instructors trained in their particular areas present courses in a personalized atmosphere enhanced by tutorial assistance.
Open to any undergraduate student enrolled in the university, the center is not a degree-awarding program, but offers courses that carry regular academic credit.
Fundamental to the center is its free tutoring program. It is available on a walk-in basis, to any undergraduate student enrolled in the university. Tutoring services are offered in mathematics and writing. The Writing Place and the Math Place offer students a comfortable and encouraging environment to receive assistance with their learning.
258 Vocabulary Development and Flexible Reading (3) (Sp)
Provides students with techniques to develop and expand their vocabulary and their textbook reading skills. The course enables students to read more effectively and to shift their reading speed to accommodate their purposes for reading. Open to freshmen and sophomore students only. LEC
262 Critical Reading Seminar (3) (F)
Prerequisite: permission of instructor
Provides students with the opportunity to develop skills that enable them to approach their college reading materials in a more critical manner. Emphasis is placed on developing methods of critical reading and writing including judging arguments, drawing conclusions, making inferences, detecting propaganda, analytic reading, and reading to solve problems. Library research skills, vocabulary development, and writing are also integrated into the coursework. SEM
Note: ULC147 and 148 are not open to students who have already taken more advanced math courses.
147 Intermediate Algebra (4) (F; Sp)
Operations on the real numbers; problem solving; operations on polynomial and rational expressions; equations with rational exponents; solving systems of linear equations in one or two variables; factoring; and an introduction to quadratic equations. LEC
148 Algebra and Trigonometry (4) (F; Sp)
Prerequisite: ULC147 or equivalent
Reviews precalculus algebra and trigonometry, with an emphasis on functions. Topics include graphing and applications of linear, inverse, quadratic, polynomial, and rational functions; limits and derivatives; exponential and logarithmic functions and applications; and trigonometric functions with an emphasis on sine and cosine. Note: ULC211 is not open to students who have already taken ENG101 or ENG201.
211 College Writing I (3) (F)
Helps writers grasp the fundamentals of standard written English. Concentrates on expository essay writing for diverse audiences. Instruction initially emphasizes focus development, content generation, and organization. Sentence structure and grammar are also a focus. Students are expected to revise their work extensively. One-on-one conferences and small-group feedback sessions are a regular part of the classroom setting. LEC
252 Writing the Research Paper (3) (Sp)
Prerequisite: ENG101, ESL408, or ULC212
Writing research and term papers is a primary activity during a student's four years of college. Introduces students to proper research skills and procedures for collecting and reorganizing information into a well-written report. Teaches students a basic method of writing a research paper. LEC
411 Teaching Writing by Tutoring (3) (F; Sp)
Prerequisite: college-level writing skills
Explores and practices strategies for teaching writing through the individual conference. Emphasizes research in writing processes and application to teaching writing. Provides tutoring practice in the Writing Place. Cross-listed with LAI411. SEM
