Athletics (ATH)
Most classes are taught in eight-week sessions. A maximum of 8 credit hours of 1-credit-hour activity courses can count toward an undergraduate degree.

101 Athletic Training Practicum I (1) (F; Sp)
Introduces the student to daily operations of athletic training facilities. Topics include equipment and supply orientation, facility management, and observation of athletic training and medical procedures. Majors only. LEC/LAB

106 Volleyball (1) (F; Sp; Su)
Develops basic skills in volleyball: correct methods of passing, setting, spiking, and serving; rules, scoring, and team play. LEC

110 Jogging and Conditioning (1) (F; Sp)
Various modalities for achieving and maintaining a conditioning program; conditioning exercises; jogging. LEC

111 Beginning Tennis (1) (F; Sp; Su)
Strictly for beginners; basic skills necessary for participation in game of tennis. LEC

112 Intermediate Tennis (1) (F; Sp)
Prerequisites: permission of instructor based on the completion of a beginning course with a grade of "B" or better, or demonstration of knowledge of the game and previous playing experience.
Develops intermediate skills to perform at an intermediate level of play. Competitive experiences. LEC

113 Beginning Golf (1) (Su)
Fundamentals of grip, stance, and swing; develops basic understanding of the game. LEC

114 Intermediate Volleyball (1) (F; Sp)
Develops control of basic skills, position specialization, rules interpretations, and the development of team skills. LEC

116 Fitness/Conditioning (1) (F; Sp; Su)
Various modalities for achieving and maintaining personal fitness: weight training, circuit training; cardiovascular development; diet and nutrition. LEC

119 Introduction to Swimming (1) (F; Sp)
Prerequisite: nonswimmer
For the nonswimmer; basic skills of swimming and the rudiments of safety in and about the water. (ARC certification available.) LEC

121 Intermediate Swimming (1) (F; Sp)
Elements of good swimming; whole stroke; increased endurance; versatility. (ARC certification available.) LEC

122 Lifeguard Training (2) (F; Sp)
Develops knowledge and skills necessary to save own life and/or lives of others in the event of an emergency. (ARC certification available.) Fee of $55.00. LEC

125 Water Safety Instructor (3) (F; Sp)
For more advanced swimmers; knowledge, skills, and practical experience in preparation for teaching swimming and lifesaving. (ARC certification available.) Fee of $60.00. LEC

130 Introduction to Ice Skating (2) (F; Sp)
Includes ice skating skills, technique, patterns, balance, rhythm and timing, body alignment and posture. LEC

133 Elementary Judo and Self-Defense (2) (F; Sp)
Basic skills involved in the sport of judo; how judo techniques may be applied to various self-defense situations. LEC

136 Self-Defense for Women (1) (F; Sp)
To enhance the options of self-defense for women by providing information and tactics for various types of abductive encounters perpetrated against women. For women only. RAD certified. LEC

143 Beginning Racquetball (1) (F; Sp)
Every phase of the game: singles, cutthroat; develops skills and physical fitness level. LEC

145 Beginning In-Line Skating (1) (F; Sp)
Develops skills for skating, gliding, balance, forward and backward skating, stopping, pivots, and crossovers. LEC

146 Intermediate In-Line Skating (1) (F; Sp)
Review of basic skills and safety components of in-line skating. Improves performance of basic skills to an increased level of proficiency. LEC

147 Roller Hockey (1) (F; Sp)
Includes basic skating, shooting, position play, and strategies necessary to play a beginner level game of roller hockey. LEC

150 Social Dance: Tango and Latin American Rhythms (1) (F; Sp)
Basic dance patterns and variations of modern ballroom dancing. Acquire skill in leading, following, and dancing comfortably and smoothly. LEC

151 Folk and Square Dancing (1) (F; Sp)
Basic steps: slides, polkas, waltzes, schottisches, grapevines, and hops used in dances of many different ethnic groups. LEC

153 Social Dance: Swing and American Rhythms (1) (F; Sp)
Basic dance patterns and variations of modern ballroom dancing. Acquire skill in leading, following, and dancing comfortably and smoothly. LEC

155 Hatha Yoga I (1) (F; Sp)
Basic Hatha Yoga postures (asanas), breathing exercises (pranayama), and relaxation techniques. LEC

156 Hatha Yoga II (2) (F; Sp)
For students who have already acquired the basic skills of Hatha Yoga; more advanced postures (asanas), breathing exercises (pranayama), and relaxation techniques. LEC

165 Beginning Badminton (1) (F; Sp)
Fundamentals of badminton: basic skills, rules and scoring, singles and doubles play, class competition. LEC

166 Intermediate Badminton (1) (F; Sp)
Advanced techniques of play and skills. Strategy and play emphasized. LEC

168 Beginning Backpacking (1) (F)
Introductory course to develop the skills of beginning backpacking and hiking. Focus is on team-building skills and group dynamics. Includes required weekend backpacking trip. Fee of $65.00 includes guides, meals, transportation, and limited equipment. LEC

170 Canoeing (1) (Su)
Prerequisite: ability to swim 100 meters with life jacket and tread water five minutes
Basic skills instruction for flat-water and moving-water canoeing. Includes instruction on safety maneuvers, rescue, and trip planning. Focus is on team-building skills and group dynamics. Final includes all-day and/or weekend trip. Lab fee of $75.00 includes guides, meals, equipment, and transportation. LEC

173 Aerobic Dance (1) (Su)
Aerobic dance routines and exercises that emphasize flexibility, coordination, and cardiovascular endurance. LEC/LAB

190 Introduction to Wellness (3) (F; Sp)
For students who want to gain confidence in dealing with their own bodies, both mentally and physically, in a fitness and conditioning program leading to overall wellness. Includes lab, which allows students to experience specific activities. LEC/LAB

201 Practicum in Athletic Training II (1) (F; Sp)
A laboratory experience designed to develop an awareness and proficiency with ARC first aid and CPR principles and practices. Majors only. LEC/LAB

220 Principles of Athletic Training (2) (Su)
Practical application of specialized athletic training techniques; basic life support; injury recognition, fundamentals of adhesive taping, strapping, and bracing applications. LEC

*221 First Aid and Personal Safety (3) (F)
Theory and practice of first aid for the injured. ARC standard course. Special attendance requirements leading to certification. Fee of $20.00. LEC

*222 Care and Prevention of Athletic Injuries (3) (Su)
Casual and preventive factors influencing sports injuries; appropriate first-aid emergency care; injuries and their managements on a regional basis. LEC

*230 Theories and Techniques of Coaching (3) (Sp)
Develops an understanding of the technical and personnel problems that confront the coach of an athletic team. LEC

*299 Philosophy, Principles, and Organization of Athletics (3) (Sp)
Organization of basic athletic programs. Includes discussions of national, state league, and local regulations and policies governing operation of public school athletic programs. Includes philosophy and principles of administering an athletic program.

495 Coaching Internship (3) (F; Sp)
Lab experience designed to enhance coaching certification for nonphysical education majors. LAB
