Journalism Certificate Program*: About The Program
About Our Degrees
The Journalism Certificate provides students with a formal educational foundation in writing and reporting for publication as well as an understanding of the US and global media. In addition, the program fosters an understanding of journalism ethics and integrity standards associated with the journalism profession. The courses are taught by UB faculty and professional reporters and editors working for local media.
Having professional reporters and editors in the classroom provides students with practical educational experiences including writing, editing, research, interviewing skills development, and understanding the expectations of editors.
Acceptance Criteria
Applicants should have completed ENG 101 and ENG 201 or equivalent courses. Minimum GPA requirement of 2.5 overall.
Students must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 overall in required and elective certificate courses in order to remain in the program.

About Our Faculty
Faculty from the Departments of English, Communication, and Media Study and professional reporters and editors of local media teach courses for the Journalism Certificate. The directors of the program are Dr. Charity Vogel and Andrew Galarneau, professional journalists in the Buffalo community.
Practical Experience and Special Academic Opportunities
Internships
In addition to internship opportunities available within the Departments of English, Communication, and Media Study, students have the opportunity to intern at national and local television news stations, news radio stations, web publications, daily and weekly newspapers, magazines, and alternative presses. Please see the program directors for internship opportunities.
Students are encouraged to pursue research-oriented initiatives with faculty whose expertise relate to this course of study.
